Students need to get out of the habit of seeing professors as sole dispensers of knowledge. This cultivates a servile mentality on the part of the student, and perpetuates a cycle that inhibits intellectual self-sufficience. Professors who have fallen into this cycle should reconsider their role as well, but this relationship can be best re-negotiated by the student changing their mindset from receiver of knowledge to creator of knowledge.
The professor is the architect of an experience for students. The way they design the course (the experience), meeting up with the way a student commits themselves to participate actively, leads to the student crating their own expertise. The student discovers the path for themselves. The path was not explicitly named and described by the professor, the professor made it possible for the student to find it.
